Onward Patch 1.8.2

Hello everyone!

Work here at Downpour continues in the wake of the PC 1.8 release. Today we’re releasing version 1.8.2 of Onward. We’ve been hard at work making improvements and solving issues you’ve reported to us. Thank you for all the feedback. The highlights of this patch include:

  • Fixed map vote getting stuck if the master client paused or left their playspace mid-vote.
  • Fixed many instances of voice chat not being in the proper state, and thus not being audible.
  • Fixed player collision becoming offset incorrectly if you placed your head inside of a wall.
  • Made gunshots louder. We have plans to further improve gunshot audio in future updates
  • Fixed realistic gunshot setting and audio device setting not saving your choices properly.
  • Fixed the shadow resolution option not working on PC.
  • Increased the speed of the AI death animations.
  • Fixed the holes in the backs of AI meshes.
  • Slightly reduced the volume of tent chat.
  • Slightly increase the volume of players if their voice chat is quiet.
  • Tweaked the volumes of atmospheric sounds on several maps.
  • Fixed servers sometimes showing that they support custom maps erroneously.
  • Fixed issues with featured social mode timings.
  • Made the level boundaries on Shooting Range the same across platforms.
  • Improved shadows on night maps to make night vision more effective.
  • Suburbia PC has had vegetation changed and some detail added to improve visual fidelity.
  • Brightened indoors in Bazaar and Downfall.
  • Fixed collision issues with some buildings and vehicles in Bazaar.

Patch 1.8.1

Hello everyone!

We have released patch 1.8.1 for Onward on PC. Improvements include a fix for LOD popping, and fixing several assets on the Suburbia map, both to improve graphical fidelity. We've also sped up the death animations and tweaked ambient audio. The update will be live in a few minutes

We also fixed a bug that would cause the autodetected graphics settings to be lower than intended. Make sure to check your graphics settings to ensure you're not on the lowest graphics settings! (will affect LOD popping and texture resolution)

Known problems:
- Map vote screen getting stuck, we're in the process of getting this resolved.
- Some props on Bazaar still don't have correct collision.
- The shield in your hand might display incorrectly for other players.
- Voicechat issues.
- Some firemode selectors don't move when switching firemodes.

What we're going to work on next besides the known problems:
- We're going to be improving the graphics overall.
- More work on the audio issues like gunsounds being quiet. Or some don't have enough punch.

The State of Onward

Hello everyone,

We’ve been listening to the feedback on the PCVR 1.8 update we launched yesterday, and I understand the frustrations you’ve shared with us. The focus for the update was not only to facilitate the launch on Quest: we’ve also implemented an enormous amount of changes under the hood that will enable us to expand Onward going into the future.

In the end, we didn’t allow ourselves enough time to bring back the full immersive experience for PCVR: the current graphics in particular are a noticeable step down from what you were used to in 1.7. I apologize for not having communicated that clearly with you, or giving you the option to make a choice between 1.7 and 1.8 while we worked on solving these issues.

Going forward the first priority for 1.8 is to bring the graphics to a higher level, and sort out the other issues you’ve raised with us over the past day. We’ll be releasing a patch today with a couple of immediate changes to LODs, as well as a handful of bug fixes. In addition to today’s patch, we’ll open up a beta channel on Steam that will allow you to revert back to 1.7 if you want to continue playing that version. This will remain an option for the coming weeks, as we work to address the issues you’ve raised.

My team has been working extremely hard over the past couple of months to make this release happen, and I’m proud of the work they did. One of the things they really need right now is some time off to catch their breath. That means that after today’s patch most of Downpour will have a week off before returning to work. Trust me they’ve earned it.

When we’re back the focus will be to release frequent, incremental improvements, and I’ll talk to you guys more about that as soon as I can. Apart from graphical changes, we’ll also keep working on bringing back the maps that didn’t make it into 1.8 yet, as well as custom content.

Thanks for being passionate about Onward. Your support over the past four years made the game possible and I’m not about to forget that. Thank you.

Monthly Sitrep - June 2020

Hello everyone!

It’s been some time, but our monthly sitreps are back with a vengeance! In our last sitrep we said it would be the last one before we would be ready to unveil the Quest version of Onward to you, and today we’re happy to say that we can do just that! As we speak (write) the Quest version of Onward is finishing up QA and the submission process. In this post we’ll cover both Onward on the Oculus Quest, and the 1.8 patch for PC.
