Fishing on the Fly News

NOTE FROM DEVELOPER

Hi all,

My name is Mac Clark and I am the solo developer behind "Fishing on the Fly". Fishing on the Fly was made using the first available video game engine to the public for free, Unreal Engine 3. I am working on another version of this game, a sequel, in Unreal Engine 5 at the moment. These projects take many years as a solo dev and when Unreal Engine went from UE3 to UE4, the tech stack was different. I kept working in UE3 anyways to finish the game. At this point the game is finished, unless I discover some earth-shattering reason to release a new build. This game IS NOT abandoned, it is complete. I just have not released it from early access yet but plan to do so.

On another note - I have faced constant trolling and fake reviews by people who put little time into the game or were paid to do by my competition. To be fair, there are bugs so save often and early. If you want to break the game, you can probably find a way. However, if you want to play a cool experience meant to value your time with knowledge drops om fly fishing that should be timeless, I think you will find a lot of value here,

I now work in the video game industry and have for several years. I help video game companies solve the crashes and errors. I've spent the last couple years traveling and talking about the things I would do different. You can find my GDC talks in the Vault.

PS - I really, really hate trolls.

Tight lines -

Game Patch

Hello all!

Dev here.

There was an issue with using the controller and landing fish. It is fixed now - X and Y are used to reel fish in too. Sorry for the controller going sideways for a bit there as I was trying improve keyboard functions via a request from the community.

This journey of making Fishing on the Fly has been a crazy one. As a solo dev before Marketplaces came to Unity and Unreal, making this game was insane. All programming, art, animations, everything was done by me. I didn't realize how short a game engine life span was back when I started, potentially making a game look dated, etc.

I spent many years making this game. I have yet to make back a fraction of my costs. I have delivered on my promises to include a trophy room and incorporated a lot of feedback. There comes a point though where it is much easier for me to deliver and incorporate new ideas in a new engine.

I will continue to address issues with this game if any come up beyond this point. However, from this point forward, I will be using a new engine for development purposes.

Please leave a comment or concern still!

Thanks,

Mac

Trophy Room now live!

You can now go into the Record Book and select your trophy to display in your Trophy Room! You are able to unlock six trophy fish to display, coming as you unlock levels. You have until the next level is unlocked before the choice for the that level is locked in. The room also allows you to travel to the rivers, etc as you unlock them.

The download for the update is 500 mb.

I also have to admit that last weeks release was flawed and broke the game. No more game freeze on the 6th level. Thank you for those that pointed this out. Good news is, I fixed it! The game now works in story mode like it should again.

Thank you for your patience as this game moves through early access.

I also included stability improvements to this release.

Plus I brought back in the A and space for reeling in fish for those that were used to it.

Also both as we all as A and D keys work to select flies in the UI screen. You can always us your mouse wheel to scroll through flies too without going to the UI.

BTW - you don't have to set the hook until like chapter 20. I worked on removing the message until then, but I only got it to work for the first fish you catch so far.

I'm looking at adding splashes for the fish when they jump and refining end game art for the next release.

I could really use some feedback!

Game update 6/3/2019

The game was updated last night. The changes to the game are huge. I have tried super hard to incorporate feedback.

*Movement Keys "AWSD" and mouse buttons now are used to fight, move, etc. You no longer have to change hand positions.

*Entire fight system was overhauled. Every fish now has its own difficulty and you must now reel by default. The fighting system also now will getting harder to reel in as you level up. Don't expect to land monster fish without a fight. Wouldn't hurt to have a nice rod for that monster too.

*Game is progressively harder as you increase levels. Harder to hook fish, harder to land them, harder to find out fish are eating. Equipment in the game will offset some of the difficulty.

*Each Equipment (Rod, Reel, Vest, Boots, Waders) piece has its own skill on top of increasing your chances. Example - One of them will lower your chances of losing a fly when a fish gets away. Equipment stats stack (i.e. owning four rods stacks that stat). Equipment stats are better for the top tier items versus lower tier.

*French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, German have been added to the language section in settings. Now the game's audio/text for chapters can be changed. Please provide feedback.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks,

Mac

Note from dev

Hey all,

I know it has been awhile since I posted or released an update for the game.

I just want you to know that I am still working on it. Creating this game took almost a decade to make. It was an act of love. I love fly fishing and I love gaming. This game will always be a part of me. Unlike other studio games, as long as I am alive this game with remain alive. As long as there is feedback, I will work towards making this game even better.

I appreciate the support of those that bought the game and played it. I meant the game as way to teach fly fishing while having fun. Thank you for taking the time to read this and your support.
