v1.40 Patch Notes

Hi folks,

We're releasing a second DemonCrawl update this week in order to fix a few bugs and test some experimental stage mod changes!

Balance Changes
  • Top Hat changed from passive to armor: "[2 Armor] If you have no magic items when you enter a stage, gain a random uncharged magic item. Whenever you use a magic item, it transforms into a different magic item."
  • Warning Sign: 35 coins -> 29 coins
  • Scrap Hopper: 25 coins -> 17 coins
  • Tabula Rasa: 24 coins -> 16 coins
  • Duster: 24 coins -> 16 coins
  • Astrolabe: 12 coins -> 16 coins
  • Timeless stage mod rework: "Your status effect timers do not update."
  • New Withering stage mod is taking the place of the old Timeless: "Lose 1 life each minute. You cannot die to Withering."
  • Tweaked Flawless stage mod: "If you take damage, exit the stage without completing and lose a random item."
  • Stats, armor, and stage power are now capped at 999,999 to prevent memory overflow issues


Developer's Note: Flawless was capable of enabling a handful of infinite combos, some of which were slightly too easy to achieve. We have decided to take a soft approach in addressing this with the item loss penalty, rather than directly nerfing any of the combo pieces. We hope this will place a reasonable upper limit on the amount of loot/stats that farming Flawless can provide.

Quality of Life
  • Added notification when trying to change favored or divine items in the codex during a quest


Bug Fixes
  • Fixed a crash between Reflector Blade and Vengeful stage mod
  • Fixed a crash caused by entering a shop without any coins as Wizard
  • Fixed a crash related to objects popped from bubbles, introduced in v1.39
  • Fixed Wizard's ultimate ability sometimes failing to charge Divine magic items
  • Fixed Ankh not activating on direct life loss
  • Fixed Bones not showing up in Codex even after acquiring the Bones blueprint
  • Fixed tooltips not showing in the Item Shop while wearing a Bandana
  • Fixed Thief Bag using Bandana sprite in its alerts
  • Fixed issue that prevented unlocking multiple Snowflake mastery tiers at once
  • Fixed a small memory leak in the Codex
  • Fixed Capitalism effect not writing to disk properly
  • Speculative fix for crash related to revive animation activating without the HUD present

v1.39 Patch Notes

Hi folks,

We are releasing a new stability patch for DemonCrawl today! This version also includes a few quality of life improvements - in particular, we have added confirmation dialogs for important buttons that could be activated by mistake.

As for Android, we are running into a number of issues with GameMaker's new IAP implementation. Unfortunately, we cannot release any new patches on Android until these issues have been resolved. We spent the better part of last week looking through our code for mistakes but our efforts have turned up short. At this point, we suspect there may be a bug in the GameMaker framework itself. We wish we had better news on this front, but until we hear from GameMaker's support team, we must put mobile development on the backburner.

On the bright side, DemonCrawl's free expansion, Sweeping Heights, is coming along really well. We should have some teasers to share with you in the coming weeks. :-)

  • The 60-second timer penalty for reloading a stage no longer applies to Casual or Normal difficulties

  • Exiting the Options screen can return you directly to your stage instead of the main menu
  • Updated Resolute Horn description to clarify that it only triggers on stage completion

v1.38 Patch Notes

Hi folks,

We're releasing a new stability patch for DemonCrawl today! Thank you to everyone for your continued bug reports.

We were planning to deploy this patch a few days ago, but fate had other ideas; our development PC kicked the proverbial bucket during a routine OS update on Tuesday. So, we've had our hands full restoring DemonCrawl's source code from backups and getting our development environment up and running again.

We are still catching up on emails and forum posts, so if you contacted us recently and haven't heard back yet, we hope you'll bear with us.
The good news is that this situation gave us an opportunity to update our development runtimes, which might mean better in-game performance.

Oh, we also added a new avatar in cooperation with Retromation:

  • DemonCrawl is now compiled using the latest version of Visual Studio and GameMaker runtime, which may improve performance
  • Fixed level-based legendary items failing to unlock under specific circumstances
  • Fixed an issue with receiving Daily Missions in locked slots
  • Fixed "A Legend in the Making" achievement not working with new types of Scribes
  • Mastery achievements will now sync to the cloud on startup (in addition to regular achievements)
  • Fixed Wishpool value not saving to disk on use
  • Fixed Gearcheck ground items not saving to disk
  • Fixed visual bug between Magnifying Glass numbers and heart animation
  • Fixed visual bug between item indicators and heart animation

Note: Due to the runtime update, we have to rewrite some code related to in-app purchases on Android. This process may take a few days, so v1.38 probably won't be available on the Playstore until early next week.

Sweeping Heights: Announcing a FREE DemonCrawl Expansion!



We are very excited to announce Sweeping Heights, an upcoming expansion for DemonCrawl that will reshape the endgame as you know it!

Sweeping Heights will be made available as a free update for all players - it's our way of saying thank you for showing so much enthusiasm and support for DemonCrawl. We could not ask for a better audience!

[h2]What can we expect?[/h2]

Without spoiling too much, we can say that that the expansion will be heavily influenced by our recent community poll. Here are a few teasers:

  • Sweeping Heights will feature a major endgame overhaul across multiple gamemodes (Beyond, Endless Multiverse, and Hero Trial.)
  • Several other highly-requested features will make their way into the expansion as a secondary point of focus. New masteries? Yup. New achievements? We've got 'em in spades.
  • Sweeping Heights will set a standard for future DemonCrawl expansions and give us an opportunity to learn the process of developing DLC for Steam and Google Play.


[h2]When can we expect it?[/h2]

We are hoping to release Sweeping Heights in about 2-3 months. Sweeping Heights is currently in the final stages of its design, and development is set to begin next week. We will announce a launch date as soon as the finish line is in sight.

Our plan is to continue releasing stability patches as we work on the expansion, but we can't make any promises as far as new content during this period - DemonCrawl is programmed by one person, and an expansion like this will require a lot of time and energy. However, we are confident that the wait will be worth it!

In particular, we are eager to implement a bunch of new avatars and inventories to DemonCrawl. v1.37 Patch Notes

Hi folks!

We're kicking off the week with a small but exciting DemonCrawl update!

As always, the full patch notes are available below.



Do you notice anything these two items have in common with our recent Welding Mask and Adventurer's Hat reworks? Answer: they are all headgear that were not originally classified as armor. That's because we designed these four items before DemonCrawl had an armor system! We're looking to fix that.

The reworked Bandana and Nightcap feature all-new mechanics:
  • Bandana gives you a temporary alternative to spending coins, which can be extended through armor fortification effects such as Forge Hammer.
  • Nightcap enables a new "pass turns" build, but must be paired with a synergistic effect like Jumprope.
