Dev Diary: Organic Restoration System

[p]In the vivid depths of Blind Descent, survival is about more than just staying alive — it’s about learning to live in a world that wants to erase your every footprint. Today, we’re diving into one of the game’s core survival mechanics: the Organic Restoration System, a living, reactive force designed to reclaim, regenerate, and resist your intrusion.[/p][p]
[/p]
What Is the Organic Restoration System?
[p]Every time you cut down a tree, drop an item, or build a structure, you’re interfering with the Martian ecosystem. But this ecosystem doesn’t just sit back — it fights back. The Organic Restoration System represents nature’s ability to heal itself and retaliate against human interference.[/p][p]
[/p][p][/p][p]This mechanic is our take on the concept of an evolving, self-regulating environment. It’s an active process that responds to your actions in real-time, adding both beauty and danger to your survival experience.[/p][p]
[/p]
Nature Reclaims Itself
[p]Build a structure, and you’ll notice small clusters, called Infection Clumps, forming around it. These clumps will grow if left unchecked, slowly spreading and overtaking nearby constructions. Eventually, the infection will consume the building entirely, causing it to disintegrate. This gives players a constant experience of push-and-pull: you can establish a base, but then, you have to defend it from nature itself.[/p][p][/p][p]
[/p][p]Cut down a tree, and you’ll be able to witness how the infection begins at the stump and then evolves from a minor cluster to full engulfment. If left alone, the infection will eventually disappear… and the tree will regrow exactly as it was before. Destruction isn’t permanent — unless you intervene fast and manage the infection early.[/p][p]
[/p][p]Drop your gear on the ground, and you’ll see nature eyeing that too. First comes mild infection, signaled by a pinkish hue and reduced durability. Then, vines begin to appear, fixing the item in place. Finally, the item is destroyed, leaving a fungal growth in its place.[/p][p][/p][p] [/p][p][/p][p][/p]
Why This Matters
[p]All of this isn’t just visual flair — it’s one of the game’s primary narrative and mechanical pillars: the world of Blind Descent isn’t dead — it’s actively rejecting your presence. The more you take from it, the more it pushes back. It forces players to think beyond crafting and resource hoarding and instead consider their long-term survival, movement, and equilibrium with their environment.[/p][p]
[/p][p]You’re not conquering Mars. You’re trespassing on it.[/p][p]

Blind Descent at Gamescom 2025

[p]Gamescom was an unforgettable milestone for Blind Descent! Presented at the META Publishing booth, the game drew the attention of players and journalists alike. Representing Pokuch, our CEO Emrehan had the chance to personally introduce the game, share its vision, and feel the excitement around our Martian survival experience.[/p][p][/p][p]Here are his thoughts and impressions from the event 👇[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]I had an incredible time at Gamescom, my first, and it delivered both personally and for the project.[/p][p]I was at the META Publishing booth representing Pokuch, introducing Blind Descent to journalists alongside Alexander Pankov and Ilya Grabelnikov. We fielded lots of excellent questions, and the energy was amazing. The feedback was especially strong on our survival mechanics and the game’s art direction. We also shared our longer-term vision, which sparked a lot of interest.[/p][p]After the B2B days, I met with Ilya and Alexander to review everything we heard, both from playtests and the show. We grasped a ton of notes that will help shape our next steps. I’m excited to wrap up the analysis and keep building a game everyone’s excited about.[/p][p]It was also a joy to connect with more people from our publisher, META Publishing, such a welcoming team, and with the wonderful folks at Emotion Spark Studio. On the last B2B day we had a small get-together; I might have had one drink too many and almost ordered an Uber from Köln to İstanbul. Huge thanks to my META Publishing friends for steering me back to the hotel 😅.[/p][p]Already missing the buzz of the show—and very excited for what’s next![/p]

Blind Descent Playtest: How it was

[p]The Blind Descent Playtest has come to an end, and what a journey it has been![/p][p]More than 37,288 players set foot into the underground jungles of Mars to test their survival skills against bizarre flora and feisty fauna. That’s enough to populate a thriving colony beneath the Martian surface![/p][p]
[/p][p]Out of all fearless survivors, 20% managed to reach the very end of the playtest version. The rest… well, let’s just say the Martian depths are unforgiving.[/p][p]
[/p][p]On average, players spent 69 minutes exploring the vibrant alien world, building a safe haven, and fighting for survival — and in that time, a staggering 199,728 crabs were hunted for food, along with about 111,864 unfortunate bunnies devoured by the ravenous pumpkin. Unfortunately for the poor creatures, the killer pumpkin bug almost doubled their death toll—press F to pay respects to the poor souls fallen victims to coding errors.[/p][p][/p][p]
[/p][p]We’ve also received an incredible amount of feedback from you. It took us time to read through it all, but we’re grateful for every comment, bug report, and idea shared. Your voices are shaping the future of Blind Descent. We’ll dive into your feedback in detail and explain how it will impact our development.[/p][p]
[/p][p]These past two weeks were an incredible ride — full of streams, screenshots, and discussions that kept the Martian caverns alive outside the game too. Thank you all for your support and contribution![/p][p]
[/p][p]This is only the beginning. Keep an eye on our Steam page and join our Discord to catch exclusive news about what’s coming next.[/p][p]And don’t forget to wishlist Blind Descent to follow the journey into the depths of Mars! 🌌[/p][p]
