New Updates!

Hello everyone!

It’s been a while since we posted any updates and we have some news for you! So what’s going on with Becastled? How is the dev team doing? Is the game abandoned? And is a new update coming on December 22?

First off, we did not stop working on Becastled. We made a lot of progress in the last year and a few months and you will see new updates and content very soon! We are committed to go through Early Access and to add a lot of features that we announced on launch day and also suggestions that we heard from you.

Why did we have such a huge gap in releasing new updates? Mostly because of our lack of experience on working on projects of this scale. We learned it the hard way, but we learned our lesson. We are going to make new updates faster now as we’ve adjusted our work pipeline to this approach.

And yes, a new tech update is releasing on December 22. And a new content update will be released on January 23!

Tech update is mostly a technical update that improves performance and behavior of our game and makes further development possible from the tech side of things. We still have a lot of content almost ready to go, as we shared before our roads system, seasons, new UI, fire system and much more. We will release them next year.

New tech update is already up on the beta branch, we are still testing it and fixing bugs but if you want to try it right now feel free to switch your game branch to beta. To do so right click on Becatled in your library list, then properties ➜ betas and select beta branch.

Dev team is relatively safe, we adjusted as much as we can to work and live during the war time in Ukraine.

Stay tuned!

Our life during last few weeks in Ukraine

Hello everyone. All our team members are from Ukraine and last weeks were life changing and heartbreaking for all of us. As you probably know, Russia started a full scale war against Ukraine. Every Ukrainian is affected and their lives are far from safe, and from what can be named normal.

We lived in Kharkiv and Kyiv that got heavily bombarded and are one of the hottest spots of this war. All team members are relocated to safer places now.

Obviously safety of our lives is the number 1 priority so we did not have any time to work on a game during these weeks and have left behind some devices which were important for work. It is really hard to return to the previous work schedule. But we are trying to restore our work on Becastled as much as possible. This will affect our update schedule. After the technical navigation update we will probably divide the City Building update into smaller parts to get things rolling.

Also we are stopping sales of all our games in the Russia and Belarus region. We can't entertain people that are responsible for the war against our country. Remember that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

Hopefully things get better and we will be able to return to peaceful times soon.

See you in the next devlog.

Devlog #4

Hello everyone, it’s devlog time!

It has been 7 months since the last update was released and we wanted to give you a more detailed view of what we have been doing and our development plans. So here are main answers in format of QA

Q: What is the current state of the game? Why has the latest update taken so long to develop?
A: We are currently working on two major tasks: content for the City Building update and the new unit navigation system. Nav system is a very heavy technical change to the game and is really important to get right, so we have prioritized it over content to get a smoother gaming experience in the end.

A lot of players had issues with low fps and lags after some time spent in a game. It is mostly due to the current navigation system. We are developing our own right now that will solve this issue, but it’s not an easy task and it is taking us a lot of time to create it and introduce into the game, but it is worth it as it’s custom built for the game and will have much improved performance and unit navigation.

Q: Are you planning to develop the next updates in a similar time-span?
A: Definitely not! In the future we plan to release updates more frequently. Closer to
every 3 to 4 months.

Q: When will the City Building update be released?
A: The new navigation system will be released before the City Building update so we can test it properly, as it’s a very heavy modification to the technical aspects of the game. We are working on updating it as fast as we can. And then our focus will change to prioritizing content for the City Building update. We will announce release dates later.

Q: So how many updates are planned for this year?
A: Definitely more than last year!

Q: What about those cool community ideas that were shared on steam forums and on discord?
A: We sorted them into our to-do list. Most of them were already there, so we are working on making them happen one day.

Q: And what about bugs and other issues, will they be addressed?
A: Yes! We have a list of them too, and will gradually fix them.

We hope this answers most questions regarding the development state of Becastled. If you have more questions feel free to ask in the comments.

Also we wanted to share some models of destroyed buildings, it will be easier to restore your city if part of it got destroyed. Can you guess what buildings here were destroyed?

Devlog #3

Hello everyone, it’s devlog time!

We are still working on a City Building update and wanted to share some things that we are working on right now:
  • Roads
  • Firefighters
  • New UI
  • New navigation system status

Roads

You will be able to place roads just by dragging a mouse.

Decorations and other buildings will snap to the road. Roads will also give bonuses to attached buildings. And you can also build roads through the gate!

Firefighters

In case of a fire villagers will fill water buckets at closest well and try to put all fires down.

Rain may save you in a right moment.

New UI

We are updating our old UI for a better version. Building menu will be modular, have more room and better design to make important actions and info visible. At the top you can see a season indicator. What do you think of the new UI?

New navigation system status

We are working on different walkable zones based on unit size. For example trolls will not be able to walk through narrow passes but regular units will be. Generally it will make movement of everything on map look more natural and believable.

That’s all for this devlog, have a great holidays and see you in the next one!
