Conquest and Conflict - DevDiary 4

Greetings, Directors!

It's Dev Diary time! Allow us to guide you through The Pegasus Expedition's combat system!

Previous installments:

A woeful reality of our expedition to the Pegasus galaxy is the inevitable need to attain the resources of new star systems to secure humanity’s future against the Colossals. Through the effort of countless fleets and thousands of military personnel, players will be able to wage war for both new star systems and to defend their own.

In the Pegasus Expedition, we wanted to have the game’s battles fit the game’s theme of overarching galactic leadership. Players won’t be micromanaging each ship individually, but giving preliminary orders safely from afar, as any high ranking personnel would.

As long standing fans of the grand strategy genre, we wanted to avoid the tedium and “stack of doom”-meta so many fans are familiar with in many similar games, so we took a fresh approach by taking inspiration from modern, more automatized strategy games, and combined that with various strategic and tactical elements, tuned to the right amount through testing and a large amount of iteration.

Battles don’t begin immediately after moving fleets, but players can complete their maneuvers on the Galaxy Map before initiating combat, as long as it’s initiated before ending the turn.

When doing so, conflict can be either resolved manually, or autoresolved. Players will also have to choose which fleet will engage the enemy first. If the attacker is repelled, combat will continue until all attacking fleets have been repelled.

When combat begins, the fleet admiral will be waiting for commands. A set of strategies, varying based on whether the player is attacking or defending, are presented to choose from. Each strategy can affect a fleet in various ways, including their combat capabilities, the number of units they separate into as well as their angles of attack, which players can also rotate as well. After a strategy has been chosen and combat begins, the fleet will separate into units and try to execute the given strategy as best they can.

After this, the player will be able to order the fleet's flagship to fire various ordnance, as well as give overarching tactical commands such as telling the fleets to run the enemy down or stand their ground. As said, single fleets aren’t micromanaged, and the player is only giving orders from afar.

That's all from us today! Please, feel free to join our Discord server and let's chat more about anything that comes to you minds!

The Story and the Setting - DevDiary 3

We greet you, Directors!

Here we are, with another DevDiary, this time talking about the game's Story!

Previous installments:

These are no ordinary times to be a leader among Humanity. It has befallen you to lead our first manned expedition outside our galaxy, and it’s not just for exploration. The Earth is in danger, soon to be overrun by the real lords of the Milky Way. It is you who must find a new home for Humanity, or find a way to win the seemingly unwinnable war back home.

However, you’re not all alone at the top. You have the council of your closest advisors; the best navy officer the European continent has to offer, Grand Admiral Élodie Perron, leading the military. An ex-special forces veteran Karolina Jurić in charge of policing and infrastructure, a leading private pharmaceutical magnate Simon Lorenz as your science officer. And the negotiator responsible for strong-arming the Expedition into existence, Evan Loch.

With these people, you will, without any doubt, lead the Expedition to tremendous success.

What may make matters more complicated is that the Pegasus Galaxy is far from empty. Every move you make is a step on someone’s toes, or a violation of someone's sphere of influence. The Pegasus Galaxy is in a delicate state of status quo when you arrive… And that balance has no room for you.

The Maelstyrakh clans are a proud but divided species. Always in the shadow of their more advanced and centralised neighbours, the Maelstyrakh are bitterly and eagerly waiting for someone to disturb the balance.

The Tamanin Empire is the pinnacle of civilization in the Pegasus Galaxy. However, they’ve been that for a long time now, which has the tendency to make empires turn inwards. The current Empress Intan Solik has forced the ambitious houses and warlords into an uneasy truce. But should something happen to the already old Empress, anything could follow.

In addition to the locals, there are other newcomers than you… Some more agreeable, some less so.

The Pegasus Galaxy is full of tension, and full of opportunity. You will build a new home for Humanity, but at whose expense, Director?

Thank you very much supporting the game and being a part of our community! We are always ready to accept feedback and do some brainstorming, so join our Discord server and let's have a chat!

Diplomacy in the Pegasus Galaxy - DevDiary 2

Hello, Directors!

The series of DevDiaries continues! Today we take a look at Diplomacy.

Previous installments:

In the Pegasus Expedition, diplomacy is conducted in two ways: by having diplomatic negotiations through the Diplomacy Window, and by visiting other factions in narrative diplomatic events to discuss current affairs.

To start negotiations with a faction and open the Diplomacy Window, simply click the Initiate Diplomacy icon when hovering over or after selecting a system belonging to that faction. Here, you may tailor your offers and requests from several actions and treaties, such as offering resources, free trade rights or exchanging scientific data as well as negotiating non-aggression pacts or peace, among other options.

In addition, you may set your diplomatic approach from a set of three options: diplomatic, pressuring or threatening. Each tone of negotiations can yield different results, but pressuring or outright threatening another faction might well damage your relations with them. When planning your diplomatic deals and choosing your approach to the negotiations at hand, you’ll see an estimation of the reaction your experts are expecting to see from the receiving party, which determines the expected possibility of success for your offer.

When a simple meeting of diplomats won’t cut it, you’ll get a chance to visit the leaders and personnel of various other factions, and affect the galaxy’s fate through direct dialogue.

Whether you choose to mingle for military assistance and scientific advancements, or with warlords to set up new puppet states amidst the ruins of civil wars, humanity’s next steps in the Pegasus galaxy will be full of intriguing twists and turns.

Investing in Infrastructure and Research - DevDiary 1

To build a functioning economy, take on military endeavours and sustain humankind, players will need to expand in the Pegasus Galaxy. This is done through establishing outposts, settlements and colonies on planets and moons, as well as constructing space stations in orbit.

The game has six main resources, consisting of both raw materials and abstract output: energy, minerals, rare earth, science, population and happiness.

Most celestial bodies are rugged and hazardous, and thus remote enclosed outposts are the only habitation possible there. These small outposts don’t allow for free construction, and instead are chosen from four outpost types when built: civilian, research, industrial, and military. Each outpost type only contains a few small facilities related to its purpose.

If a planet or moon is suitable enough for human life, you may upgrade your outpost to a settlement or colony depending on the celestial bodies habitability, after which you may construct more facilities there. To construct buildings, you can either click the planet or moon you wish to construct on, or click the Construction View button of a system while it’s selected or hovered over.

This opens the Construction View, shown below, featuring information about the planet or moon, the buildings that have been already built as well as the remaining building slots, free for new construction projects. Simply click an empty slot and click a building shown in the opened building menu to build there. To demolish a building and free its slot for a new one, right click it and confirm the demolishing. Most construction projects take one turn to finish.

In order to upgrade an outpost, you’ll need to hire a governor for the system while doing so. Governors have different strengths and gain more with time, so choosing the right one for what you want to use each system for is crucial to maximising your economy.

Your research efforts, on the other hand, progress automatically based on your science output from various facilities and sources. To choose what to research next or the direction of your long-term research, click the tech tree icon on the top right side of your screen to open it and click a technology to queue it into your research queue.

By utilising these avenues of progress, you will need to conquer and develop many worlds in order to succeed in your mission. Good luck, Director!

Don't forget that The Pegasus Expedition has a demo version available here on Steam, so you can try the game out even before it gets released!
