Chilly DevLogs from Alaska ! #33

Welcome to thirty-third DevLog for Alaska Gold Fever!

Hello travelers!

Hey there, fellow devs and adventurers!
Today, we wanted to dive more into the exciting design decision behind using a human character to match our captivating Alaskan environment in our upcoming game.
So get ready forrrr:

Meet Cormac Sullivan - part 3

Remember him? Time to dig in about some last things about this one guy
and some realted stuff!

By placing a human character within the cave, developer gain an immediate sense of scale and perspective.
The character becomes a relatable reference point, allowing devs to grasp the vastness of the cave, its chambers, and its hidden corners.
Here is Cormac in cave :D But not just ANY cave, it's his special cave :D but more info about it in game or later ;)

Cave or exavation site?

Grab your virtual pickaxe, and with each adjustment and stroke, bring your cave to life!
That could be an Alaskan add that will advertise travelers to life in Alaska :D

Actually in Gold Fever you can hide in some caves and mines to hide from cold and especially from a wild wildlife! (and not so wild life that means bandits)

So there will be some caves that you can't transform to mines but you can find something interesting in them! (like outlaws camp)

Skulls and bones?

Pirates on Alaska?!
No, no that just some technical language here :D
Bones in Unity offer the magic touch to bring your virtual characters and objects to life.
Using Unity's sophisticated skeletal animation system, you can create fluid and realistic movements that breathe authenticity into your games.
See picture, often bones matches the real world bones in character but not always.

Colors awaken!

In the left image, vibrant hues burst forth, bathing the scene in a rich tapestry of color - well that's the bit of exaggeration but you get my point :D

While lighting has yet to take its place, the colors themselves can create an atmosphere of a place.
Lighting is yet another thing, icanmake a 99 devlogs just about it but for now i will let you know - its mucho importante! Like light in movies and photography! Some companies have a big teams just for lighting (see in credits in any AAA game :D)

Logging into the Alaskan Gold Fever

What if... Alaska Gold Fever from a perspective of netrunner from Cyberpunk? :D

"In this virtual Alaskan wilderness, I'm not just a netrunner;
I'm a digital prospector, sifting through lines of code to uncover virtual gold veins."

Just kiding :D but next devlog will be about landscapes and wild life :D
We're done with the topic of Cormac Sullivan and time to move to the next one :D
See you around!

Welcome to thirty-second DevLog for Alaska Gold Fever!

Hello travelers!

Greetings, adventurers of Alaska Gold Fever! Today, we're thrilled to share the captivating process of bringing the our iconic character Cormac Sullivan to life in stunning 3D, using the incredible Blender software (and others).

Meet Cormac Sullivan - part 2

Cormac is a weathered and rugged Alaskan prospector, his appearance reflecting a life of resilience and determination. Surviving in the harsh environment has made him a guiding star for other adventurers seeking gold.

However, he remains tight-lipped and untrusting, only willing to share his knowledge with those who prove their worth through mining gold themselves.

As players complete quests for him, they may earn his trust and gain access to his valuable expertise, but only experienced adventurers stand a chance of earning his respect.

Cormac's form takes shape

In the vast digital world of Blender, Cormac's essence began as a simple sphere, a blank canvas awaiting transformation.
With unwavering determination (like Sullivan), we embarked on a sculpting adventure!

So the first thing is of course a body. A body type. and i assume it not about fat or thin character but more like "what body type i need" . Will i need a HUMANOID? or some BEAST? But if it beasy so what shape of beast? a wolf-like? dragon-like? Hopefully we just need a himan character so it's easy for this time :D If a game have more diverse range of characters (enemies and such) a 3D sculpting can take a much more. In Alaska we just need some humands and few animals so its nice.

What is "Default human face" ?! Who have it??? A first human? So it should be monkey-like :D

Attire of the experienced PROSPECTOR

Cormac's pants in 3D are a sight to behold!
They're practically the eighth wonder of the world. It's rumored that the modeling software couldn't handle the sheer ruggedness of his pants and had to take a break to recover (we recently had some RAM-emergency in our company ;) About any PC equipment - remember kids: always push it in very carefully ! ).

Details about details

Cormac's attire spoke volumes about his resilience.
We shaped the clothing to accentuate his rugged charm, each patch and wear proudly revealing the trials of his Alaskan life. Remember: The details are important! ;)
And there is a way to not burden performacne too much even with little details like little buttons

What is it? a texture used on some bushes in Alaskan wilderness?

Not exactly :D It's a moustache!

Nowadays making such details is easy (well not THAT easy) but in 90' there was no way of adding such detailed hairs and moustaches. Rememeber PS1 era?

Respected and famous but... something is amiss

Despite the harsh Alaskan environment, Cormac's appearance is nothing short of legendary.
Some say he looks like "Yes-Chad" decided to go off the grid and survive in the wild. Just look at this similarites :D

And that's all for today!
Remember our game will be minig-related but also don't forget to uncover the secrets of the Klondike and forge bonds with NPC characters!

Welcome to thirty-first DevLog for Alaska Gold Fever!

Hello travelers!

I heard that you missed me ;)
And i missed you!
We were so busy with our other games that we had no time to write about our beloved Alaska!
But no time for devlogs ≠ no work on the game
What it mean? :D That we have been working on Alaska all this time :D
And today I will show you something we have been working on :D

Meet Cormac Sullivan - part 1

Alaska Gold Fever will have a carefuly crafted NPC characters, almost each one will have backstory and will be a part of main quest or side quest!

Today let's see a bit more details of one this character - Mr Cormac Sullivan !!

Concept art first, as always. Doesn't he looks like Einstein? :D

Cormac Sullivan, the grizzled prospector. This seasoned Alaskan has left his cobbler life behind in Massachusetts and embarked on an epic journey to chase the glittering promise of gold in the Klondike during the late 1890s.

"What's your role in this play called life, kid?"

Cormac's appearance tells a story of resilience and determination and shows the harsh and complicated life he leads. In the harsh Alaskan environment, he can be a guiding star for the player.
His job is to help the players, but only if they can mine gold themselves first.
He will not say a word to every prospector - you have to earn his trust.
Do some quests for him and he will spill some beans, but remember: only experienced adventurers have a chance to gain his knowledge!

The wise Alaskan prospector

And of course he is important to the main plot! But I can not tell you more at the moment ;)
Most of the time he is calm and determined, but something happened that he lost his calm expression and his face changed in a minute (see picture). What caused this sudden change? One day you will know ;)

Discovering the richness beyond gold

With his robust build, weathered face, and eyes that hold both determination and humor, he's a man who has experienced the full spectrum of Alaska's harsh weather, untamed wilderness and... people.

Though Cormac's gold may not have made him a wealthy man (yet), he possesses a wealth of knowledge and experience that transcends mere material riches - like who to avoid doing business!

Sully without eyes and colors yet by with determined face already

Uncovering hidden truth?

Sullivan - our designer came up with this name (and a whole character), but the name Sullivan always triggers a certain character in me. A monstorus Sully from the old movie Monsters Inc. :D
Maybe it's a hidden double life of our Sullivan? :D Who knows !!! :D (I asked the designer and he denied it)

But he told me that this char is kind of based on another character in some very widely known Color Cowboy Game 2 but i can't tell you on which character because this will be spoiler for this game as well for Alaska :D

Also, you will see this character MUCH MORE more often from now on... And why? You will find out ;)

Thank you for reading and be ready for a next devlog Soon™ enought !
We will continue the story about our Cormac Sullivan and show more technical material about his creation in 3D software!
Take care of yourselves!
