Next Fest Demo Patch - June 10th (version 0.3.3)

[p]The second day of Next Fest comes to a close, and we're continuing to make updates to Generation Exile's demo! Update to the demo just went live, mostly focused on improving performance and fixing some of the more disruptive bugs we've had reported.[/p][p]We're also aware of a rendering bug on the main menu affecting a handful of players. We haven't been able to reproduce this issue internally, but some very helpful players have sent in some detailed reports (thank you!) to assist with the detective work. We suspect it might be related to some specific hardware configurations (maybe specific GPUs?) and how they handle some aspect of the vector graphics implementation we have for our UI. This is a pretty low-level issue - and might actually be a new and exciting engine bug we've discovered - but we're continuing to investigate and want to see this bug eliminated for everyone its affecting.[/p][p]Thanks to everyone who has checked out the demo and shared their thoughts and feedback about the demo so far, it really is great to receive any and all of your experiences![/p][p][/p][p]Full patch notes follow:[/p][p][/p]
Patch notes (demo version 0.3.3)
City Builder & Colony Sim Fest starts today!

Well hello, it’s been a while! Chances are, if you’re reading this in the last week of March 2025, you encountered Generation Exile as part of the City Builder & Colony Sim Fest.

When we heard this Fest was a gathering of games about building a thriving community - be it a vibrant city where citizens work together in harmony, or a tense village constantly on the verge of collapse - we knew Generation Exile had found a home amongst friends.

If what you love about city-builders is creating the perfect layout, or if what makes colony sim so exciting for you is seeing a cascading series of unexpected events, know that we’re making Gen Exile because we adore games like this and want to push the direction of the genre even further.

Set aboard a generational starship, departing an Earth whose ecosystems have almost totally collapsed, Gen Exile is a turn-based city-builder where you cannot meet your populace’s needs by ravenously extracting more and more natural resources. Instead, you must not only survive but learn how to thrive using only what has been brought with you. Procedurally generated characters and storylines mean that every journey — spanning several hundred years — will be uniquely yours.

Over the past few months, our team has been quiet because we've been busy focusing on our pre-flight checks - final riveting on the starship hull, life support and navigation systems checks, loading the gear and supplies. But seriously, we’ve been working our metaphorical butts off making sure Gen Exile is in amazing shape, and we’re looking forward to being able to share more with you all very very soon.

If you haven’t already, please Wishlist and Follow us - it might seem like a small thing, but it will really help us reach new folks as well as let you know when you’ll actually be able to play Generation Exile. Your support is what makes this endeavour sustainable and we are truly grateful for your interest!

Check out our extended video interview with PC Gamer!

Oh, well hello! As you probably know, we announced our game as part of the 10th Annual PC Gaming Show during the it’s-no-longer-E3 week in June.

It was equal measures flattering and inspiring for us to announce what we’ve been working on alongside so many other incredible-looking games. However, the brief interview clip of us as actual human beings that was aired during the PC Gaming Show was just a small taste of the conversation we got to have with the folks from PC Gamer here in Vancouver, Canada. Now they’ve put up the entire smörgåsbord of the conversation for you to feast upon, so please go do so!

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
… it’s actually a very reasonable bord, the video is like 15 minutes long.

On a related note, thanks so much to all of you reading this. We’re still blown away by the reception we received when we announced Generation Exile and all the positivity and support we’ve been getting from all of you. Some of us have been working on this game for a very long — some might even say irresponsible — amount of time and finally being able to talk about it even a little is surreal. We’re trying to make something a bit different on several fronts with Gen Exile and trying to introduce a couple new flavours to the city-builder recipe has not always been easy. It’s been really enlivening to hear your excitement, so truly, thank you.

But also, to be honest, talking about a game that isn’t available yet is something of an unusual exercise. We’ve had our heads down in the trough pretty thoroughly, so we’re not sure what you want to hear from us (beyond the obvious “When will the game be playable?” which we’ll answer as soon as we can). We’d love to know what you’re interested in, so please let us know in the comments!

The only thing we’re going to ask from you as we go is if you haven’t already, please wishlist Generation Exile. Just click that little green “Add to Wishlist” button on the page you just came from or, ya’know, right here:

You might have heard that things are pretty rough out there for game developers, and especially so for smaller ones like us without deep venture-funded pockets or the backing of a megacorporation. Wishlisting the game signals to Steam that there is interest in it, which then means it gets shown to other potentially interested Steam users (e.g. someone who has a city-builder or two in their Steam library) and more than anything else, this will help us make Generation Exile into the game we want it to be. It seems like a small thing but to us, it’s truly huge.

From everyone at Sonderlust Studios, thank you so much for being here with us.
