Playtest Results

[p]Thanks again to everyone that joined the playtest. It was a lot of fun and we have some really useful feedback. Playtest sign-ups are now closed, but if you've already signed up then you should be able to continue a little longer before we take that down.[/p][p][/p]
Some things we learnt
• [p]Players LOVE kicking seagulls, (payback for those times at the beach perhaps?)[/p]
• [p]Poop is hilarious.. (but our waste system needs to be explained better).[/p]
• [p]Our unique sinking island mechanics were interesting and surprising.[/p]
• [p]Bunkers and the story have a lot of people hooked.[/p]
• [p]Players love being able to directly control characters (in addition to automation), it makes them feel more involved and attached to their characters. We need to continue improving some controls (such as the raft).[/p]
• [p]Players were really surprised at how polished and bug free it was (don't worry there are bugs!)[/p]
• [p]Players really love the art direction, vibe and slightly humorous tone.[/p]
• [p]People that don't often play colony-sims have been really enjoying the game.[/p][p][/p]
We need to improve onboarding & tutorials.
[p]Oceaneers appeals to a lot of different players (survival-crafters, colony-sim gamers, and life/farming sim gamers), and there is a lot of depth and mechanics in the game.[/p][p]Sure, a lot of players did pick everything up really quickly, but we still need better guidance. [/p][p]Part of this is that unlike a lot of other games, we let you both have direct control over your characters, and automate tasks. Players love being able to do both of these, but it adds a little bit to the learning curve.[/p][p]We have already started to improve the tutorials and UI in the latest patches, but we have a few more ideas, so rest assured this will be smoother come demo time.[/p]
• [p]We will improve the tutorials an onboarding.[/p]
• [p]Simplify instructions, and "show don't tell" more where possible.[/p]
• [p]Continue to improve UI and QoL.[/p]
[p][/p]
We need to tweak the controls.
[p]While controlling characters is easy in most situations, it can get a little finicky on the raft. Part of this is due to how versatile our rafts are - for example you can have a character driving and having other characters standing on the raft, when given a "Work Here" command in the ocean, everyone will salvage in the area and get back on the raft when they are done (on top of this, work here commands can be queued).[/p][p]We want to keep this multi-character functionality as it's really neat, so we will continue to improve the controls and character behavior (we have already made several improvements). Tutorials play a part here as well, some players not realizing you can just click a raft to select it, so we need to do a better job with the raft instructions.[/p]
• [p]We will continue to improve controls.[/p]
• [p]Improve instructions for control rafts.[/p]
• [p]Add game options to let players customize how some controls work.[/p]
[p][/p]
"What game is it like"
[p]We like to ask players what game it reminds them of, and, "oh buoy", we have seen just about every game under the sun mentioned by now! [/p][p]It's been really interesting to see what type of games players have brought up - obviously this depends a lot on which games payers have played in the past. In no particular order:[/p]
• [p]Don't Starve and Paper Mario (in relation to the art style).[/p]
• [p]Oxygen Not Included, Rimworld, The Survivalist, Cult of the Lamb.[/p]
• [p]Raft (and open world survival crafting games in general).[/p]
• [p]The Flame in The Flood, Flotsam, Frostpunk & Sheltered.[/p]
• [p]A hint of Fallout/Fallout Shelter.[/p]
• [p]Monkey Island, The Sims, Craft the World, Clanfolk.[/p]
[p]We knew there would be comparisons to similar looking games (like Don't Starve and Oxygen Not Included), so we were extremely pleased to see players add comments to this comparison that Oceaneers is still very different and innovative, it's very much doing its own thing.[/p][p][/p]
What's Next!?
[p]We are working on improving the experience for the upcoming demo. If you have already signed up for the playtest, keep it installed as we will probably drop a few patches for you to try (and we will keep it active for a while to anyone that signed up, even though the sign-up itself will come down).[/p][p][/p]
Come have a chat!
[p]Our community is growing, and everyone has been amazing and really friendly. Come chat with the devs and other players in our Discord[/p][p][/p]
Leaving Feedback
[p]If you encounter any bugs, or would love to discuss features please do so via the Steam forums or our Discord. It's really helpful to know about the parts of the game you enjoy, as well as anything you don't.[/p][p][/p][p]You can also check discord for a list of known bugs, community suggestions and upcoming plans![/p][p][/p][p]

Playtest Extended! Patch 0.0.4M Now Live

[p]Thanks so much for everyone that has joined the playtest and provided feedback, it's going so well that we are going to extend it for a few more days! Lots of players are really enjoying the experience, in particular the unique twists and story that opens up near the end of the build.[/p][p]Also.. people seems to really enjoy kicking seagulls 😂[/p][p][/p][p]We have also just dropped a new patch to improve the new player experience, and we have even more plans for this as we go.[/p][p][/p]
Patch 0.0.4M
• [p]The handbook guide has been overhauled and now allows you to play (and replay) tutorials on various topics, and includes a handy search function.[/p]
• [p]You can now equip tools from the selected character box without opening the character sheet.[/p]
• [p]The character list no longer shows need stats, and instead shows the character occupation (we have more planned for this in the future).[/p]
• [p]Relaxing at a fire now recovers energy slowly (previously it only stopped energy from decreasing). Note that this is not intended to replace beds. This is significantly slower that sleeping in a bed during the day, and much slower than sleeping in a bed at night.[/p]
• [p]Automated relaxing was previously based on whether mood was low, now it will also take into account whether energy is low.[/p]
• [p]Replaced some music tracks that may have youtube content ID flags.[/p]
• [p]Seagulls can now steal waste from large waste piles and tiny waste pile pickups (what a shame….)[/p]
• [p]Characters now have Relax on the lowest priority, so they will prefer any other tasks, and wont interrupt tasks to go and relax.[/p]
• [p]Characters that relax at a fire (automatically) will interrupt it to go do a job if there is one available, unless you manually gave them the relax command.[/p]
• [p]Events now also show in the center of the screen so you can quickly notice them, they disappear quickly but stay longer in the event list on the right hand side.[/p]
• [p]Increased Waste Bin storage amount from 15 to 30 (this is a temporary change for the demo since it doesn’t have other ways to deal with waste).[/p]
• [p]Moved the handbook button to make it stand out more.[/p]
• [p]Added a menu button to the top of the interface.[/p]
• [p]Added a tutorial about accessing the tutorials…[/p]
• [p]The new day summary will now show some quick tips, which include very short tips about things you may have missed along the way.[/p]
• [p]The new day summary includes a reminder to check the character sheet to find out why your characters are losing resolve.[/p]
• [p]Added a note to the workpost about enabling jobs in character sheets, and added requires workpost to the relative area in the character sheet.[/p]
• [p]Added a Help button to the escape menu, which takes you to the tutorials in the handbook.[/p]
• [p]Added a note about water barrels in the Food Crate & Provisions dialogs.[/p]
• [p]Added a description to the science boost dialog.[/p]
• [p]When starting a new game with the Default or Cozy survivor group, you now start with a coconut shell.[/p]
• [p]Opening escape menu or handbook should now cancel any current building placement action[/p]
• [p]Pressing the character sheet keybind (default C) will now select a character and open the sheet if no character was selected.[/p]
• [p]Changes to the research tree to make the categories more obvious.[/p]
• [p]Replaced the colony island guide with a tutorial popup.[/p]
• [p]Fixed the character sheet missing the dark background blockout.[/p]
• [p]Fixed a bug where there was a tiny chance the keypad could spawn on an island crumble.[/p]

Playtest Patch 0.0.4J Now Live

[p]Thanks to everyone providing feedback on the playtest so far, looks like everyone is having a lot of fun which is great to see! There are still a few more days left on the playtest![/p][p][/p][p]We wanted to put up a patch that focuses on some improved raft controls, so here it is. Love to you hear your thoughts on the changes. More improvements to come![/p][p][/p]
Patch 0.0.4J
• [p]Raft movement changes. Right clicking with a raft selected now shows the context menu by default, you can hold CTRL just to do a move without the menu. [/p]
• [p]You can use the Work in Area command on the ocean for characters on or near the raft to automatically do tasks in the raft work area. Some people did discover this feature previously, it has been improved and the delay before characters look for things to do has been reduced.[/p]
• [p]The raft mast can be selected to change the size of the work area. We have removed the previous work area settings for the raft only for now, and this function works regardless of whether characters have automation enabled. This was needed to simplify the process and avoid confusion, we may add back some filters later.[/p]
• [p]You can queue up Work Areas, characters automatically board, drive and work.[/p]
• [p]You can still manually move the raft, select characters and fully micromanage them as you desire (sometimes you just want to harvest one item).[/p]
• [p]When you give a character the “Drive Raft” command, the raft will automatically be selected (unless you are holding SHIFT to queue commands)[/p]
• [p]Most debris piles that gave beachwood now give +1 beachwood.[/p]
• [p]Added a “Pickup Items” category to automation workposts. Spoiled waste will only be picked up if you have the storage for it.[/p]
• [p]Automating salvaging will now include Science Cubes, Science Capsules and Bottles in the work area.[/p]
• [p]Resource tooltips now show growth conditions for plant seeds.[/p]
• [p]Renamed “Progression Guide” heading to “Starter Guide”[/p]
• [p]“Open handbook” is no longer a pre-requisite of other objectives, but it still shows as an objective.[/p]
• [p]Added a link to the feedback form when quitting the game.[/p]
• [p]Added “Build a bed” to the Starter Guide objectives.[/p]
• [p]Added new BioSoil recipe to the composter, this is now the base recipe, with fertilizer recipes to come later from higher tier resources.[/p]
• [p]Added a note to dead things like crabs, to show they need to be butchered to get the resources used in food etc.[/p]
• [p]Added a note about rain to the dirty water pool.[/p]
• [p]Added a note about more survivors to the Survivor Stories new game screen.[/p]
• [p]The “Explore the island” Story objective has been made more specific to “Read the strange note”.[/p]
• [p]Added “Send an expedition” to the Story objectives, to indicate that it is necessary to progress the story.[/p]
• [p]Fixed some typos on tools.[/p]
• [p]Fixed characters trying to automatically relax at a fire that was already full of people relaxing.[/p]
• [p]Fixed characters sometimes facing the wrong way when kicking nodes.[/p]
