GRIT Dev Blog #2 - Gear in the Wild West

Howdy Partner,

With our second round of playtests going live this Friday, April 16th starting at 8am Pacific Time, we reckon it was time for another developer blog to help you gain further insight into your gunslinging ways.

The Quick Start Guide is a valuable resource for taking note of the weapons in GRIT, but it’s high time that we also touched on the various pieces of gear in our wild west royale. Grabbing gear is important, but just as important is knowing what to use in each unique situation.

Please take heed that the team continues to make massive changes to the game on the fly, so a lot of these items can be tweaked or wholesale changed, with even more items on the way.

Dynamite
Nothing goes boom in GRIT with more spectacle and impact than a stick of dynamite. Dynamite can be cooked and tossed - dealing damage in a large radius, with respective damage falloff outside of the main explosion area. It can be an excellent way to engage when you’re in a standoff against an opposing posse. If you see the other side loading up and a stick flying through the air and coming at you, you best run.

Smoke
To make it out of a sticky situation, sometimes it’s best that you not be seen. Smoke bombs provide cover for your movement and disengagement, so that you could live to fight another day, or perhaps flank the enemy from a position that they were least expecting.

Tonics
Every gunslinger in the wild west has their eye out for a drink at one time or another. In GRIT, tonics will help you gain the upper hand. Tonics are a quick way to gain Grit, which heals you over time as it passes through your system. Grit is also one of the only ways to heal fully. You will be exposed to opposing gunslingers when drinking, so it’s best to assess the situation, keep an eye out for enemies, listen for footsteps, and drink when you believe you won’t get shot.

Liniment
Restores the least amount of grit.

Bitters
Gives you a good amount of grit.

Snake Oil
Fills you to the brim with grit!

Healing Items
Equipment that allows you to heal in the nick of time. Be careful! You can’t move very fast when using healing items. Making a judgement call on how much time you think you have to heal, with enemy gunslingers potentially just around the corner, will help you decide what equipment to use to heal. Where your overall health is at will also help inform which healing item makes sense to use.

Bandages
Restores the least amount of health, but you get two every time you find them and they’re the fastest to heal with. Cannot heal you fully. 25% at a time up to 75%.

Suture Kit
Restores most of your health, but cannot heal you fully. Fairly quick to use, heals up to 75%.

Med Kit
Heals you fully, but takes the longest time to heal.

Backpacks
It’s best to be able to carry as much as possible, and backpacks are a way to allow for that. Don’t forget that your horse also contains a place to put your inventory, and the best part is that this inventory can be shared with your squadmates. So if a partner is low on health and you have healing items, that partner can grab it and heal while riding with you on the same horse.

Rancher’s Pouch
A pack of common rarity, the pouch has additional storage capacity that can help you carry more items.

Wagoneer’s Sack
A rare pack that has the highest storage capacity, for those looking to load up on items.

Utilizing all of this good gear while collecting poker hands via weapons, all while keeping your eye on all the enemy gunslingers and the oncoming calamity storm is a surefire way to make sure that you and your posse are the last gunslingers standing in GRIT. Be sure to join our Discord for the latest on the upcoming playtests.

GRIT Dev Blog - The Perk System

GRIT has come out of the gate with guns blazing, lead flying, and trains at full speed. The Steam Playtest has been tremendously exciting so far and Team Grit knows that it is all because of you. Gunslingers jumping into the wildest early days of the wild west are the bedrock of what makes a great community, and we thank you kindly for your time.

Our goal is to help you understand the finer points of this battle royale so that you and your posse are ready for the wild road ahead. We're gonna start it off correct with one of GRIT's exciting features, the Perk System.

Every weapon in GRIT has a card attached to it, shuffled up random every time. Your two rifles, sidearm, and melee weapon make up a hand of four cards. Get two cards of the same suit and you'll unlock a perk for yourself. Match all four of the same suit, and that flush will not only boost your power but spread the love to the entire team.

Why bother countin' cards when the undertaker's right around the corner? Perks build teamwork, and teams that work together win fights and go home walking instead of in a long pine box. Here's what these cards can do for you.

Spades: Gunslingers collecting Spades relish the Dead Man's Hand. They're focused on hard hitting precision, shooting through the thickest armor and fanciest hats.

Hearts: Someone's gotta look out for the rest of the posse. Gather up Hearts and help your friends last longer when the lead is flying, with better, faster healing and endurance that rewards standing and fighting.

Clubs: This suit brings you closer to the best friend a gunslinger could ever have: their horse. Fill that hand with Clubs and your horse goes faster, rides harder, fights better, and leads the stampede so all your teammates can keep up.

Diamonds: A thinkin' person's suit, Diamonds are for those with a predilection for high falutin' machinations, and the guts to act when the time is right. You'll be able to keep an eye on the enemy in a gunfight even when they're hiding, and share this intelligence with your teammates.

Hit harder, last longer, ride faster, be smarter. Fantastic advice for anyone with a pistol and a grudge, but how do you make it happen? There's some common sense steps to get you and your team on the same page.

When you first land, you know your priority is getting armed and making sure more bullets leave than enter. The hottest drops mean you just need to fight, and the cards can wait. But when the smoke clears and bodies start cooling, take inventory of what you have and what's around you.

GRIT rewards teamwork. Talk to your posse, ping items, grease the wheels and be a team player. Do your best to mix up the suits, and don't be afraid to try something new. A squad of selfish shitheels all scheming to stack up Spades are gonna get ventilated by a well balanced crew that works together.

If you've got three of a kind, is it worth it to drop a fancy weapon for one that's the correct suit? Might well be. Four cards of the same suit benefits your entire team, far more than any one gun would. Besides, there's always more guns, you just gotta have the grit to take 'em from those... others.

Finally, there's the ol' double dualies, two pairs of different suits. While you won't benefit your entire team with this, it might be the best that can be done with the armaments before you. Play to your strengths, and use the two perks you've put together to build a gunslinging style all your own.

That's the long and short of it. If your heart is aching for percentages, figures and statistics, rest assured that information will be available in game. Don't forget this is a playtest, flowing like a river, and the state of things will change based on your feedback. Your shootin' inspires us, your feedback fuels us, and you know we admire your GRIT. Come on by the Discord [https://discord.gg/fightwithgrit] to ask your questions and speak your peace.

GRIT - Quickstart Guide

Howdy Partner,

It’s a wild, wild, old west out there in our battle royale game called GRIT, so we reckoned that we would make you a handy guide. Get ready to get your boots dusty.

Disclaimer: GRIT is constantly being tweaked and updated, with gameplay details subject to change.
Game Modes
GRIT has you facing off against 99 other gunslingers in a large wild west map. You can do this Solo, where you and the other 99 lone riders battle it out until there’s only one winner left.

Duos will have you team up with another player, as you fight off against 49 other duos to claim yourself king of the west. Any time that you have a partner (or two or three), you can be knocked down and are able to help each other back up when one of you is gunned down. It always sounds simpler than it is, as you best watch your back when doing this - you’ll be exposed and potentially gunned down as well.

In Squads, you’ll be able to jump in with a gang of 3 or 4 gunslingers. You’ll want to coordinate and generally stay together, and mind that you have enough horses to make it out of coming storms. Remember, each horse can be ridden by two of you!
Showdown Mode
When you’re killed in GRIT, do not fear! You’ll have a second chance to get back into the old west as you enter Showdown Mode. Here, you’ll wait to square off against another gunslinger in a one-on-one duel, each of you with a pistol and a dream. Defeat your foe and get sent right back into battle.
Perks
You’ll notice that every weapon that you pick up contains a corresponding card with a suit. Combine suits to unlock any of the perks below:

Hats and Armor
In the wild west, everyone has a hat. You’ll look good and proper in one, and if you don’t like yours, you can kill someone and take theirs.

Hats provide the following benefits:
 • They are dashing and boost confidence in a gunfight.
 • They deflect 50% of the damage of one incoming headshot then fall off onto the ground.
 • They can be picked back up from the ground and placed back on your head.

You can also find armor around the map that blocks body shot damage until it breaks.
Weapons
GRIT has a large assortment of weapons and items to pick up. Make sure you mind all that glints in buildings and scattered about outside, while keeping from getting shot, naturally.

Not all weapons are created equal. A weapon's rank dictates the quality of the gun. If a player sees a gun of a specific rank they can reliably know that it's a flat-out "better" gun than ones lower in the hierarchy. We use the ranking that comes from a deck of cards: T/J/Q/K/A. Aces are always best, of course.
 • TEN: Common Grey: The weakest weapons in the game that you'll want to replace as soon as you can.
 • JACK: Uncommon Green: Reasonably good weapons with no outstanding stats.
 • QUEEN: Rare Blue: Solid, reliable weapons with good stats.
 • KING: Epic Purple: Very high quality weapons. We reckon that most ideal "end game" loadouts will be made up of these.
 • ACE: Legendary Orange: Extremely rare and unique weapons, finding an Ace should make you feel that you’ve arrived.

The weapons in GRIT have a broad range of feels and engagement ranges to help adapt to your playstyle. Here’s a quick primer on them:

PISTOLS
The Duster
THE quickdraw duelist's revolver. It's Single Shot as a baseline but also has Fan Fire mode, meaning players won't need to click pace their shots, and the hipfire-only burst mode allows for even more aggressive play at a tradeoff.

Alt-Fire: Burst fan-fire mode (locked into firing all bullets but empties magazine at 1.5X normal firing speed). This mode also disables aiming down sights, only allowing players to fire it from the hip.
Trigger Style: Full-Auto
Ammo Type: Light Rounds
The Longhorn
This is a reliable, medium range, all-purpose revolver. It doesn't have a fan fire mode like the Duster but with a solid rate of fire and paced shots this gun can be deadly at close and medium ranges.

Alt Fire: Double-tap
Trigger Style: Click
Ammo Type: Light Rounds
The Pact
High damage, short range. Primary fire mode is two shots so packs a whallop. This is an unwieldy gun that can dish out a ton of damage if you can land your shots.

Alt Fire: Single fire
Trigger Style: Click
Ammo Type: Heavy Rounds
The Bison
This is a hard-hitting, slow firing, long range hand cannon. It's unique as the only non-sniper that uses marksman ammo.

Alt Fire: None
Trigger Style: Click
Ammo Type: Marksman Rounds
The Bandit
Black powder variant of the pistol class. It's single shot and has a slow reload but should hit like a rolling train at close-mid ranges.

Alt Fire: None
Trigger Style: Click
Ammo Type: Black Powder
The Growler
The only shotgun-pistol in GRIT, the hard-hitting Growler is an excellent companion for a rifle or a sniper for when an enemy gets a little too close.

Alt-Fire: Empties both barrels in a single blast.
Trigger Style: Click
Ammo Type: Black Powder

RIFLES
The Cavalier
A speed-shooter's quickdraw rifle. It's mobile, fast, and deadly in the hand of someone who can track well.

Alt Fire: Single fire
Trigger Style: Full-Auto
Ammo Type: Light Rounds
The Westchurch
The classic longarm, most similar to the Winchester if we're talking IRL references. This weapon rewards a skilled hand that can land head and torso shots with steady pacing.

Alt Fire: None
Trigger Style: Click
Ammo Type: Heavy Rounds
The Garrison
Hard-hitting, slower-fire lever action. Sits at a point just below something in the Sniper class.

Alt Fire: None
Trigger Style: Click
Ammo Type: Heavy Rounds

SHOTGUNS

The Overland
Close/Mid-range double barrel shotgun.

Alt-Fire: Empties both barrels in a single blast.
Trigger Style: Click
Ammo Type: Shotgun Shells
The Alpine
This Double-barreled hunting shotgun has the longest range of all shotguns. With a high headshot multiplier and low-ish bodyshot damage it rewards a skilled hand that can aim for the head.

Alt-Fire: Double Barrel Blast
Trigger Style: Click
Ammo Type: Shotgun Shells
The Outlaw
A rare pump-action shotgun for the time. This weapon excels at close-range engagements and building-storming.

Alt-fire: None
Trigger Style: Single Shot
Ammo Type: Shotgun Shells

SNIPERS
The Deadeye
This gun is a medium rate of fire, lever-action sniper with decent headshot modifiers. It shares a lot in common with the Garrison, but the marksman sights and ADS zoom allow it to fill its own niche.

Alt Fire: None
Trigger Style: Click
Ammo Type: Marksman Rounds
The Ranger
This gun represents a sort of high-caliber hunting rifle. It's a single shot black powder weapon with a medium rate of fire. It's no Sharps for ranged headshots but with slightly higher mobility it's potentially better to use when you're on the move.

Alt Fire: None
Trigger Style: Click
Ammo Type: Black Powder
The Sharps
High damage, high velocity sniper with slow ADS and handling. The only "true" scope gun in the game. This is the gun that can punch through any armor with a headshot if you're running the Ace version of it.

Alt Fire: None
Trigger Style: Click
Ammo Type: Marksman Rounds

We’ll get into more detail in the systems in GRIT, and even some surprises in the coming days and weeks. In the meantime, the best way to holler at us and the community would be to join our Discord.
