Mainline Patch - April 9, 2020

To work closely with the Closed Beta testers, we continue to do weekly updates. While it means that some bugs might make it past our QA team, it does help us get more immediate feedback from our changes.

A "mainline" patch brings all of the past week's development work into the Closed Beta test. There will be a maintenance downtime during this patch release, after which the patch will be released for download.

Bug reports in the Steam Discussion, via Feedback button in-game, and through Discord are incredibly helpful, thank you! Players will notice many of their reports listed as fixed in today's Patch Notes.

Today’s patch includes the announced level cap update and character wipe, which means all characters, items, and Fort objects have been wiped clean (it was the last of our Toilet Paper, you monsters!). We are very excited to see how the updated experience feels to new and veteran testers alike and hope these recent updates will continue to improve the flow and progression of the game.

This patch also includes one of the most EXPLOSIVE UPDATES YET! You might be excited about some of the other updates and fixes coming soon, but the revision to exploding barrels is one of my favorite changes yet! They no longer explode immediately, which gives obsessive smashers like me time to contemplate our compulsive need to destroy other people’s things.

More to come next week, so as always, thank you for all the feedback, bug reports, and testing!

See you in-game!

Contract Rewards, New Level Cap and Wipe

Hello Torchlight Community!

We have heard concerns about Torchlight 3’s end game, and we are making some changes. While we have made some adjustments to improve it, we know that we still have work to do. These first changes aim at making some of our existing systems do a better job in the late game. We still have some more adjustments like these to make, but we also are looking at potential bigger changes - no promises yet.

First, the contract system exists to reward extended play and we’ve made those rewards better. For players who are more focused on power and achievement, contract rewards now include: item bundles, ember cores, respectacles, more map packs, enchanting recipes, essence, and gold. We hope that this presents some clear rewards for continuing to play - ones that have more impact than improving your fort.

Second, we are reducing the end level grind. The level cap will be lowered from 100 to 60. With the story content ending at around level 50, this leaves a shorter mapworks grind to max level. The hunt for the perfect top end gear can start earlier. It also provides more space if/when any additional future end-game content is added. Here are more details:
  • Change the hard cap for things like bonus level on items spawned, mapworks level progression, etc.
  • Adjust the curve of how much XP is required for each level-up.
  • Cap item levels at 60 instead of 100.
  • Update the achievement to reach level cap down from 100 to 60.
  • Redistribute skill points: 80 skill points max per character, 10 points can be invested per skill.
  • Give Skill Tier Bonuses at levels 3/6/10 instead of 4/8/12

Now, we can’t just lower the level cap and a bundle of other updates without it breaking some things - particularly existing characters. Plus, we want to see how the changes feel in a sanitized environment. So next week, when this update is live, all of your character data will be wiped and the world will start fresh to coincide with the start of the Closed Beta. While wipes are normal in Alpha and Beta stages, we know that they can be tough; the Closed Beta Test NPCs are still there to help push characters up through the levels and we encourage players to utilize them to play late-game content whenever they want to.

(You can find NPCs in each town, for example on the West Docks of Trevail Point that will boost your character level and give you a base set of items. Please note that you may want to complete your Relic quest before boosting your character, as your Relic will be chosen for you if you don’t.)

Look at this wipe as an opportunity to try out some new builds, reconsider that fort layout and try a class that you’ve neglected. Thanks for rolling with this change - it’s part of your contribution towards making this a better game.

- Tyler & Shawn

Mainline Patch - March 31, 2020

To work closely with the Closed Beta testers, we continue to do weekly updates. While it means that some bugs might make it past our QA team, it does help us get more immediate feedback from our changes.

A "mainline" patch brings all of the past week's development work into the Closed Beta test. Players will need to exit the game in order to download the new version.

Bug reports in the Steam Bug forum, via Feedback button in-game, and through Discord are incredibly helpful, thank you! Players will notice many of their reports listed as fixed in today's Patch Notes.

Today’s biggest update comes from a conversation we had with our Discord community. After discussing a lack of viable defensive character builds, we’ve updated defense to have a bigger impact on gameplay. We’ve increased the damage mitigation, meaning you’ll be better protected if you’ve focused on optimizing your defense. We’ve also adjusted shields to be stronger and more effective against blocking. Between these two updates, this should give players more options for those that like to play more defensive/tank-like builds.

Also included in this update are stability fixes, updates to portaling, and UI enhancements. We’ve also made updates to make the Fort unlock sequence better and cleaned up some environment issues so that items should no longer be stuck behind Boss chests.

More to come next week, so as always, thank you for all the feedback, bug reports, and testing!

See you in-game!

Torchlight III entering Closed Beta - Achievement Unlocked!

Hey Torchlight Fans,

Torchlight 3 is entering Closed Beta this week. This is an acknowledgement of where we are in the journey of making this game with you. Let’s take a couple moments to look at how we got here.

Back in November of 2018 we ran two Weekend Alpha events - where the game was quite rough and several design risks were on display. Then from March through December 2019 we were in Closed Alpha - with various big updates along the way. Listening to feedback, we completely remade several fundamental systems in Updates 1-9. Remember when skill progression was currency based? Or Relic Weapons that swapped out your equipped weapons and only had one power?

Then, in January 2020, we released Update 10 with some massive new content: the Sharpshooter joined the fray, and heroes began delving into the Echnonok mountain fastness of Act 3. We also announced that the game was renamed to Torchlight 3 and that our business model had changed. Happily, your response to that was resoundingly positive. Since Update 10, we’ve been releasing patches almost every week. Although some chunky content like Class Skill Tiers, cinematic transitions, and legendary items have been added in this time, the TL3 team has been almost entirely focused on bug fixing and polish. You’ve seen their massive bug fix lists in the patch notes, and how polish on combat skills can make a massive difference in game feel almost overnight. We still have a bunch of that to do - especially as we prepare to launch on the various platforms. Which brings us to today.

We see TL3 as ready for the label “Closed Beta”. These definitions for Alpha, Beta, and Early Access vary widely across the industry. To us, Beta reflects the fact that we have shifted from “adding” to “finishing”. We have a massive list of bugs right now to work through: some of them obvious, painful and unshippable and some of them minor, nitpicky and skippable. So what can you expect to see in the coming months beyond bug fixing? We will keep listening for problems and find solutions that we can achieve while still hitting our dates. This is because part of entering Beta means aiming towards Launch Day.

So while there’s no big fireworks in Torchlight 3 as we enter Closed Beta, it’s still a major milestone for Echtra on the way to Launch. It’s the time when we can really polish what we have. We couldn’t have gotten here without your help, and we appreciate that. Together we have found the path to a great game.

Tyler Thompson
TL3 Project Lead

Quick reminder from Echtra: The Closed Beta test is still invite-only and the NDA remains in effect. We’re getting closer every day to opening the doors wide, but we’re not there yet!

Mainline Patch - March 26, 2020

To work closely with the Alpha testers, we continue to do weekly updates. While it means that some bugs might make it past our QA team, it does help us get more immediate feedback from our changes.

A "mainline" patch brings all of the past week's development work into the Alpha test. Players will need to exit the game in order to download the new version.

Bug reports in the Steam Discussion, via Feedback button in-game, and through Discord are incredibly helpful, thank you! Players will notice many of their reports listed as fixed in today's Patch Notes.

This week's patch is loaded with a variety of fixes and updates. Most noticeable on the list below is the completion of several Forged and Sharpshooter skills and milestones, 15 new Legendary items, more available language options, and updates to Relics and Pets.

We've adjusted some quests and also added some guidance in finding the Luck Sprout within your inventory, as that has been confusing for many new players.

Oh... and Champions now spawn at higher rates when playing with a higher number of players or at a higher level of difficulty. Because that's just more fun, innit?

We've got a lot of additional updates coming in the next couple weeks, so as always, thank you for all the feedback, bug reports, and testing!

See you in-game!
